Cancer center receives grant from Avon

May 21, 2007

Antietam Healthcare Foundation, the fundraising division of Washington County Health System, received a $225,000 grant from the Avon Foundation at the closing ceremonies of the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Washington, D.C., on May 6.

The two-year grant will be used by the John R. Marsh Cancer Center to fund an outreach coordinator position. Susan Lopp, administrative director of the cancer center said the purpose of the position is to reach uninsured and underinsured women. They will receive information about breast cancer education, screenings and free mammograms. "The outreach coordinator will identify women who need access to annual breast cancer screenings as well as to those 40 and older, who need an annual mammogram," Lopp said.

The goal is to connect 100 hard-to-reach women with a regular screening program for breast health. The outreach coordinator will focus on getting the information to minority women, especially those in Spanish-speaking communities.
