SMITHSBURG - The Washington County chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation drew 175 walkers and raised $35,000 on Saturday to be used for research to find a cure.
"We reached our goal," said Paula Kriner, chairwoman of the Great Strides Walk.
Walkers solicited sponsors for their mile and a half trek through Smithsburg Lions Community Park, where they were treated to lunch followed by an afternoon auction of items donated by local merchants. The auction alone raised $3,400, Kriner said.
"We had a lot of new teams and a lot of new people this time," she said.
Cystic fibrosis is a genetic, potentially life-threatening disease that affects the respiratory and digestive systems.
