Mail Call

May 17, 2007

"Welcome to Sinkhole de Mayo, Washington County."

- Maugansville

"I'm reading 'You Said It,' Tuesday, May 15, and the caller from Ringgold asked what happened to the milk of human kindness in reference to the immigrants. The milk of human kindness is one thing, but taking the cream off the top is not justified."

- Williamsport

"I was just wondering, after the taxes are paid in July on our properties, if Mr. Hershey would give the county commissioners enough money to buy a map, so that they'd know where Bakersville Road, Keedysville Road, University Road and Mansfield Road are located. Those roads are in such bad shape, I doubt if we'll be able to get over them to go to the polls."

- Keedysville

"I'm a taxpaying resident of Hagerstown, and I would like to know what became of our home rule charter group. I haven't read anything in the paper about what they are writing about, and I would hope that we would have a write-in for residents to say their say. Please inform us in the paper what's going on with the home rule charter."

"In reference to the newspaper article on May 15, in The Morning Herald 'Welcome to new health chief.' That is awful nice for the Opinion (page) to put in about Earl Stoner getting that position. My mother was his Sunday school teacher years ago at West End Baptist Chapel, and she would really be proud of him. Thank goodness we got somebody from Washington County elevated to a managerial position. Hats off - good job, Herald Mail."

- Leitersburg

"I see where a guy 101 years old got beat up and his car stolen. First it's that woman in her nineties in New York, now it's the guy 101 years old. I think we ought to put the shoe on the other foot and start beating them up."

- Boonsboro

"This is for the caller from Ringgold. If she wants them here so bad, let her take care of them. Our senior citizens can't even get enough from Social Security to buy gas, food and medicine, yet they want to bring other people over here and take care of them."

- Washington County

"I read quite a few articles in the 'You Said It' about the Medicare prescription plan. It's a plan for the birds. It helps our age, sure. It helps your secondary insurance company that does not have to pay for anything it doesn't approve of. It helps you dig your hand deeper into your pocket to see if you can find enough money to pay for your medicine. It keeps your pocketbook lighter."

- Boonsboro

"How's it possible for al-Qaeda to be responsible for capturing three American soldiers in Iraq when the Democrats have been saying al-Qaeda is not and has never been in Iraq?"

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling about the Hagerstown caller who mentions Wisconsin and how that state ordered a gas station owner to stop discounts. I believe that is illegal, actually. I can't imagine a state in the U.S. doing that to private enterprise. On the other hand, we're told that our Constitution will be totally inept and not of any value. So this is the start of it."

- Rohrersville

"The price of gas has gone up just in time for the spring and summer driving months, $2.99 a gallon. A few weeks ago it was $2.59 and $2.69 a gallon. By mid-summer it will probably be $3.50 or pushing $4. It's a shame that we have to deal with this kind of thing eating into our family budgets."

"Would someone please tell me just how bad a road has to get before the county comes in and repaves it? Because if Keadle Road, from Mount Laurel Road to Boonsboro Mountain Road, got any rougher you wouldn't be able to get across it with a horse and buggy. I don't know if we've traveled back in time or what. County Commissioners, get in your cars, drive down here and take a look at this road. If you can drive on it, I'll buy your next car. It's ridiculous. Come down here and see the road and tell me if this road is fit for Boonsboro."

- Boonsboro

"Everybody, call your senators tomorrow. Right now they're discussing reform of the immigration law. Tell them we don't want any more illegals in this country and we don't want babies from illegals becoming citizens in this country. Do it now because they're discussing it today and tomorrow. Make sure you call your senator and tell them how you stand on illegal immigration."

- Boonsboro

"I just wanted to say that if gas prices keep going up the way that they are, employers are going to have to start increasing employee wages to compensate for it. Otherwise everyone will have to get their bikes out."

- Williamsport

"I was getting ready to mail a letter today and I was going to put a stamp on it and I didn't know if the stamp I had was the 39 cent one or the 41 cent one. It didn't even say on the stamp how much it was for like it used to. Why would they quit printing that on there? How are you supposed to know how much the stamp was for?"

- Hagerstown
