A wry look at the 'best' of Mail Call/You Said It

A wry look at the 'best' of Mail Call/You Said It

May 17, 2007

"It amazes me how the people in Washington County can get upset over $15,000 to implant more immigrants into Washington County."

Plastic surgery has really made some advances lately.

"Did you say that, or is that something you said?"

Neither one.

"I think Queen Elizabeth ought to go home. We hardly have enough money to feed ourself without feeding her. Who does she think she is? When she's done eating, everybody's done eating."

Yeah, who died and made her the Queen of England?

"I don't understand people. They get very windy."

If only people would be sunny and warm.

"I just want to congratulate the County Commissioners for turning down the refugees. We have enough refugees over here already that we're taking care of. I think these County Commissioners really deserve a Purple Heart or something for voting this thing down."

Somebody in this situation needs a heart.

"Please, any county commissioners reading this, fix the roads in Dargan at the intersections of Harpers Ferry Road and Back Road. The pot holes are bigger than the Grand Canyon."

Fix them? If they're that big, we ought to turn them into a tourist attraction.

"This is to the person who said Iran's president is kind and gracious. Well, the president of Iran prohibits the word 'pizza' because it is too American.

Wrong again. Encyclopedia Brittanica says pizza came to the U.S. at the turn of the century with Italian immigrants. Next he'll be saying French onion soup is too American.

High five to this caller:

"This is in response to the caller who is upset about trees being planted on Locust Street. Trees are a vital part of our ecosystem, because they produce oxygen for all living creatures. They also absorb carbon dioxide, which is a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. So please, be thankful for the trees." - Hagerstown

Questions:

"I'd like to find some Hershey's ice cream by the half gallon or gallon. I don't know of any store in the area that sells it. Here it is so close to us, and hardly anybody sells it anymore." - Chewsville

According to the company Web site, hersheyicecream.com, there are no local stores that sell pre-packaged Hershey ice cream. However, I called Hershey Creamery Company customer service at 800-221-5381, and was told that Wal-Mart stores carry pre-packaged Hershey ice cream.

"Can anybody tell me what they're doing on Maugans Avenue? I heard it's another entrance to Mack Truck. Thank you." - Maugansville

According to the Washington County Roads Department, no permits have been issued for Mack Truck to install another entrance on Maugans Avenue. Most likely the area referred to is the area where a stormwater management pond is being installed.

This year Maugans Avenue is being widened between U.S. 11 and Interstate 81. Work is now under way.

If you are interested in following the progress of this or other county road projects, you may go to the county government's Web site at www.washco-md.net and click on "Road Work Update."
