Local athlete sets Big Ten javelin record

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. ? Penn State senior Allen Pettner, of Mercersburg, Pa., won his second straight Big Ten title in the javelin Sunday with a conference-record throw of 239 feet, 9 inches.

Pettner, the former standout at James Buchanan High School and Hagerstown Community College, now has the No. 2 NCAA mark in the country this year. He has also met the "B" standard (229-8) for the 2008 U.S. Olympic trials, which will have a field size of 24 men in the javelin.

The "A" standard is 252-7 1/2. Athletes who attain the "B" standard will be included only if additional competitors are needed to fill the field.
