Volunteers 'treasured'

May 15, 2007

Volunteers with the Washington County Department of Social Services Adult Services Unit were honored April 17 at a volunteer luncheon at the Fireside Restaurant. The theme was "Volunteers - Priceless Treasures!"

The luncheon recognized volunteer representative payees and shopping volunteers who assist disabled vulnerable adults. Volunteer representative payees manage the statutory benefits, such as Social Security checks, for disabled people who do not have relatives or friends who are able and willing to assist them with paying their bills. Volunteer representative payees are Jean Moales, volunteer coordinator, Betty VanLaningham, Joyce Stanley, Linda Sappington and Michaela Whitaker.

Shopping volunteers purchase personal-hygiene supplies for people with HIV/AIDS, using funds donated to the agency. They are Betty Sundstrom, Nell Stewart, Lois MacCumbee, and Joan and Leo Komorowski. The funds donated are raised primarily by the Maryland Correctional Institution's AIDS Walk and Citigroup Community Involvement Team's Book Fair. The volunteers were thanked for their dedication by John Kenney, program manager, adult services, and Trish Briscoe, HIV/AIDS case manager.
