Welcome to new health chief

May 15, 2007

It has to boost the morale of an organization's employees when one of their own is promoted to head it up. So it is with the appointment of Earl Stoner as health officer of Washington County.

Stoner, who replaces William Christoffel, began his career with the department in 1993 and rose through the ranks to become a division director and then deputy health officer in 2005.

Stoner helped run the agency after Christoffel went on paid administrative leave in June 2006, then retired in October of that year.

We were pleased to hear that one of Stoner's top priorities is the prevention of teen pregnancy, which not only adds to the taxpayers' burden, but prevents young parents from accomplishing all that they might otherwise.

This won't be an easy problem to get a handle on, but as a former All-American runner, Stoner said he'll draw on three attributes that served him well in that field - discipline, determination and commitment.

We congratulate Stoner and wish him well in his new position.
