The Smithsburg boys and Williamsport girls won the team titles Saturday at the Washington County Tennis Championships at South Hagerstown High School.

The Smithsburg boys finished with 14 1/2 points. North Hagerstown was second with 11 1/2 and Clear Spring was third with 10.

The Williamsport girls won with 12 points. Smithsburg was the runner-up with 9 1/2 and Clear Spring was third with 9.

"I think it's awesome that we won the men's team championship," Smithsburg coach David Seifarth said. "All of the guys have been dedicated all season to reach this goal. They really deserve this. They are great listeners and they learn extremely fast. It has been a great first season for me. All of the kids are fantastic to work with. All of the training that they have put in has paid off for them."

Smithsburg junior David Kurz won the boys singles championship match, pulling out a 6-7 (1), 6-2, 6-3 victory over Patrick Stahel of Williamsport.

"It took a lot of hard work," said Kurz, who raised his record to 16-1. "Winning the county title was one of my goals going into the season and I am glad that I achieved it. It was a really close match. I just tried to play my style of tennis and I just tried to play solidly.

"Patrick Stahel played an extremely good match. He is an exchange student from Switzerland. I started to play a lot more aggressively after the first set. That was the difference in the match."

Kurz and 2006 graduate Derek Kretzer were last year's county champions in boys doubles. They were second in the region and qualified for the states.

Williamsport senior Rebekah Coleman improved her record to 15-5 when she won the girls singles championship match. She defeated North's Gretchen Schoeck, 6-4, 6-4.

"I didn't have any special preparations for today," Coleman said. "I just played my normal tennis that I have been playing all year. I don't have a strong serve. I just serve the ball in. I'm pretty simplistic with my tennis. Gretchen Schoeck gave me quite a battle. Both of us were pretty much on the same playing level. I thought that it was a really good match."

Clear Spring's Amanda Jenkins and Sarah Dice improved their record to 13-3 by winning the girls doubles championship match. The came back to beat Smithsburg's Mia Doyle and Tessa Doyle, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Andrew Beadle and Cory Shives of Clear Spring won the boys doubles championship match, squeezing out a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory over North's Allen Sandberg and Charlie Brasher.

Brendan Benisek and Amy Matonak of Williamsport won the mixed doubles championship match, beating Misbah Shafi and Jon Vick of Smithsburg, 6-1, 6-1.

The Maryland West region championships will be held at Baker Park in Frederick on May 18-19.
