Two men arrested on drug charges

May 10, 2007

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Two men were arrested early Wednesday at a Martinsburg motel where they were staying, according to Berkeley County Magistrate Court records.

Robert L. Adams Sr., 44, of 307 N. High St., Martinsburg, and Richard M. Bowers, 19, of 846 Currency Drive, Bunker Hill, W.Va., each were charged by Berkeley County Sheriff's Department Deputy R.L. Steerman with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance (heroin) and conspiracy to possess and deliver the drugs, records show.

Both were arraigned by Magistrate Joan V. Bragg. Police later learned Adams was wanted by authorities in Baltimore and Frederick County, Va., on outstanding warrants, one related to heroin possession, court records show.

According to Steerman's complaint, a confidential informant contacted police on Monday about drug deals happening at the Krista-Lite Motel off Apple Harvest Drive just south of Martinsburg.

On Tuesday, Steerman said he and a couple other deputies began to monitor activities at the motel, specifically foot traffic in and out of two rooms registered to Bowers.

At 2:30 a.m., on Wednesday, Steerman said deputies searched the rooms and found eight small straws containing heroin in pants that Adams was wearing. A small bag containing heroin and a hypodermic needle was found in a night stand in one room, Steerman said. Police also found a small amount of marijuana and additional numbers of straws cut in half that are used to package heroin, Steerman said.
