Musical 'Cinderella'

May 10, 2007|by TIFFANY ARNOLD

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Mother-daugther connections in the Chambersburg Community Theatre production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Cinderella" will go beyond the evil Stepmother.

The play opens Saturday, May 12, and closes Sunday, May 20, at The Capitol Theatre downtown.

Director Vicki Gontz said Cinderella was the first show in which she performed, 16 years ago at the Capitol. Now, it's her daughter Billie Jo House's first crack at "Cinderella."

House is playing Portia, one of the stepsisters.

"I actually tried out for the first 'Cinderella' 16 years ago and I didn't make it," said House, 27, of Chambersburg. "I was heartbroken, and that was my mom's show. It's like we've come full circle."

"On Mother's Day, my mother's directing it, I'm in it, and my mother's mother will be in the audience," House said. "That's like three generations."

Sally Herritt, the theater company's executive director, said this is Gontz's first time directing "Cinderella." Gontz said the thought of taking on "Cinderella" initially made her a little nervous because she doesn't know how to read music.

"I decided to take the plunge," Gontz said. "I thought, I'll just have to find a really great musical director."

So she found Stephanie Salisbury, who Gontz said has helped her through the production.

"She's great, like 'How to Direct a Musical for Dummies,'" Gontz said.

Salisbury, playing the piano, will work with three other musicians - her daughter Becca Salisbury on the keyboard, percussionist Marlin Barnes and bassist William Wilson.

Gontz said the music makes the play the more memorable.

"We're what makes the play magical," Stephanie Salisbury said.
