'Forum' is not to be taken seriously

May 10, 2007|by TIFFANY ARNOLD

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - To see Apollo Civic Theatre's production of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" is to indulge in "utter silliness," its organizers said.

"It's definitely not a serious play," said Director Susie Miller. She described the play as fast-paced, humorous and a little bawdy.

Set in ancient Rome, the play follows the scheming Pseudolus, a slave who will do anything to win his freedom.

Pseudolus tries to earn his freedom by encouraging a romance between his master's son, Hero, and a young virgin named Philia. But the scheme doesn't go quite as planned. After a bout of mistaken identity, a foot chase and the threat of an incestuous marriage, Pseudolus is finally able to win his freedom.

Boomer Rose, the 19-year-old cast as Pseudolus, said the role allows him to stretch his legs as an actor.

"The role of Pseudolus is radical, he'll do anything he has to do to make the audience laugh," said Rose, who is from Purcellville, Va., roughly a half-hour from Martinsburg.

While he enjoys the role, there is a fine line between acting and overacting - though Miller is good about reminding him when he veers into the latter category.

"She runs a tight ship," Rose said. "She let's me know when I go too far. She pulls me back in."
