Top teachers enjoy use of vehicles

May 09, 2007|by JANET HEIM

Julie Baker and Gwen Pangborn were selected as Washington County's top educators recently. Baker, who works at Maryland Correctional Training Center, was the private school Teacher of the Year. Pangborn, a kindergarten teacher at Smithsburg Elementary School, was chosen as the public school Teacher of the Year.

As part of their recognition, each received free use of a new vehicle for the year. Baker will be driving a Ford Edge from Hagers- town Ford, while Pangborn was given the keys to a Honda Accord from Hagers- town Honda, which has the words "Teacher of the Year" across the top of the windshield. Once each vehicle reaches a specified number of miles, the teachers trade them in for a different model, they said.

Pangborn, who was driving a "very old Mercury Villager" minivan, said she loves the seat warmers in the Accord.

Baker, whose P.T. Cruiser is now being used by her daughter while her daughter's vehicle is being repaired after an accident during the March snowstorm, said her favorite feature of the Edge is the backup beep.

"I'm not a good backer-upper," she said.
