What Do You Think?

May 06, 2007

Editor's note: Each week, The Herald-Mail invites readers to answer poll questions on its Web site, Readers also may submit comments about the poll question when voting. Each Sunday, a sampling of edited reader comments will run in The Herald-Mail.

There were two poll questions last week. The first question was: Many people had a special teacher who helped guide them on a specific path. At what point in your education did you meet that teacher?

"Ms. Lori Werner at Frederick High School was the best teacher I've ever had. Although her classes were business classes, she taught us about life. No one else did that."

"Actually, most of my teachers were all excellent teachers. I mostly owe my direction which came from my parents. My parents were my best teachers. My parents cared a great deal about their six children. They gave us the life skills to succeed in life. Do I make tons of money? No. It is who I meet and what I do that makes me successful. Teachers are all around us. Teachers helped to add to what makes a person. As far as I am concerned, all teachers are special."

"OK, so I was afraid that I was going to run out of room, but I would love to mention some professors from HCC. Professor Spring Ward, YOU ROCK! Professor Ann Clark, love your passion for the written word! Professor Joan Bontempo, love your passion for art! Professor Marchner you are the ARTS MAN! Professor Crawford, you know how to reach the math geeks and those that are not, too! Professor Shubert, we will truly miss you! Dr. Thorpe, you make chemistry real! Dr. Stein, your compassion for your teaching is beautiful! Dr. Nickerson, your zeal for biology is catching! If I missed someone please forgive me. HCC ROCKS!!! Because of the teachers that love what they do!!!"

The second question was: Which one of the five applicants for the vacant Washington County Board of Education seat would you select - Donna Brightman, Jacqueline Fisher, Gary Nally, Robin Schneider or Russell Williams?

"I would not select any of the five applicants because it is not my job to select one of them. Furthermore, I would not wish this job on any of my friends and I don't have any enemies that I wish to punish that much. The members of the BOE are grossly overpaid to be rubber stampers and grossly underpaid if they are not rubber stampers. It is not a good job and I am surprised that there are five applicants."

"You have to wonder why these people are such gluttons for punishment? I recognize three of these poor souls as former candidates for the job that didn't get in. Now, they're looking to get appointed into this mess that is the (Washington County Board of Education). If their spirit's willing to bust through ... and push for real, positive change, then may the wind be at their backs. If this is some attempt at ink-gathering, there are better ways to grab newspaper space. Try a classified ad."

"On a serious note, as a community we really should pay more attention to who we vote for School Board. They have a much bigger impact on our community then many people realize."
