What happened: Five people have applied for a vacancy on the Washington County Board of Education. A committee has been formed to review the nominations and recommend three choices to Gov. Martin O'Malley, who will pick the replacement.

What's next: The committee will hold an organizational meeting Monday at 4 p.m. at the school board office, 820 Commonwealth Ave., Hagerstown. Committee Chairman Rodney M. Shoop said the meeting is open to the public.
