HAGERSTOWN - City officials are forming a Hagerstown Beautification Advisory Committee within the next few weeks as part of a program to keep the city presentable, said Melissa K. Hynes, a city planner.

The city will accept applications until Wednesday from people who are interested in joining the committee, she said.

Ideally, Hynes said the committee would be selected by the third week of May.

"(The committee will) act as the leading force in our movement to make Hagerstown a better place to live, work, play and visit," she said. "We are looking for enthusiastic representatives of the local garden clubs, Neighborhoods 1st groups, the Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Chamber of Commerce."

Hynes said professional gardeners, landscapers and artists also are encouraged to apply.

Committee members will act as mentors and provide residents with the necessary contacts to make improvements on public property for a program called Keep Hagerstown Beautiful, she said.

Some of the improvements that residents will address include gardening, landscaping and painting projects, Hynes said.

As a preliminary project, volunteers will meet Saturday at Fairgrounds Park to work in flower beds, Hynes said. If several people attend that event, known as Join Hands Day, she said the group will begin painting the park's stables.

"Spring is finally here, and with the summer just around the corner, the City of Hagerstown is anticipating the most beautiful time of year," Hynes said.
