Va. teen who died in crash identified



MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Berkeley County Sheriff W. Randy Smith identified a 16-year-old Winchester, Va., girl who was killed Sunday morning in a one-vehicle crash on Interstate 81 as Erica Marie Jones.

Jones apparently lost control of a 2005 Kia Spectra near the Tablers Station Road exit, according to a Sheriff's Department spokesman.

Witnesses to the crash said the vehicle was traveling north on the interstate about 7 a.m., police said.

It appears the girl lost control of the car as she was trying to exit the interstate at the Tablers Station Road interchange, police said.

The girl was the only person in the car and authorities pronounced her death at the scene, police said.




Abandoned house fire ruled as arson



MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A fire that destroyed a house Sunday morning off Cheshire Road in southern Berkeley County was an arson, Assistant State Fire Marshal Ed Robinson said Monday.

The fire destroyed a two-story house at 455 Cheshire Road, which officials said was vacant for a couple of years. South Berkeley Volunteer Fire Co. chief Rick Petry indicated Sunday the house had no electrical service.

About 30 firefighters from South Berkeley Volunteer Fire Co., along with crews from Baker Heights and Clearbrook, Va., battled the blaze upon arriving at 10:38 a.m., officials said.

Motorist killed in Frederick Co. crash



BUCKEYSTOWN, Md. - A motorist was pronounced dead Monday at the scene of a two-vehicle accident that sent three people to hospitals, according to a press release from the Frederick County (Md.) Sheriff's Department.

The identity of the driver who died in the accident at 4:17 p.m. on Lilypons Road was being withheld Monday night pending notification of the victim's family, police said.

Three people in the other vehicle were flown to Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Md., and the Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, police said.




Man charged in pharmacist shooting



FREDERICK, Md. - A 52-year-old Frederick, Md., man who allegedly shot a pharmacist in the shoulder after demanding narcotics is charged with attempted murder, according to a press release from the Frederick Police Department.

Maynard Neil Mangold, of the 8000 block of Edgewood Church Road, was arrested Monday morning at his home after two witnesses supplied police with information about a vehicle, police said.

Lee A. Gustafson, 63, of Claridge Drive South in Frederick, was treated at Washington County Hospital and released. Police said he was shot in the shoulder Sunday afternoon by a man demanding narcotics at the drive-in window of CVS Pharmacy at 2040 Rosemont Ave.

Mangold is charged with second-degree murder, attempted armed robbery, use of handgun in a crime of violence and first-degree assault and reckless endangerment.




Two people hurt in Franklin Co. crash



FANNETTSBURG, Pa. - Two people were injured Sunday night in a one-car accident on Path Valley Road in Metal Township, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

The accident happened at 10:24 p.m. when a northbound 1993 Honda Accord went off the road and struck a utility pole, police said.

The driver, a 17-year-old girl from Fannettsburg whom police did not identify, and a passenger, 20-year-old Mark Reilly of Fannettsburg, had major injuries, police said. The girl wore a seat belt, but Reilly did not, police said.

Both were flown out by helicopter, police said. Reilly was in fair condition Monday at Hershey (Pa.) Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Information on the girl could not be obtained.




Police investigate home burglary in Pa.



GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Pennsylvania State Police in Chambersburg are asking for help with an investigation into a burglary in the 11500 block of Burkett Lane in Greencastle.

The burglary happened between Friday and Saturday nights, police said. Anyone with information may call police at 717-264-5161.




W.Va. man charged during traffic stop



FREDERICK, Md. - A 46-year-old Charles Town, W.Va., man pulled over for following a vehicle too closely was charged with driving with a suspended license and a drug violation, according to a press release from the Frederick County Sheriff's Department.

Terrence L. Henderson was charged after the traffic stop at about 7:40 p.m. Sunday on Interstate 70, police said. He is accused of possession of marijuana, driving too closely and driving with a suspended license, according to the press release.




Frederick Co. man faces assault charges



UNION BRIDGE, Md. - A man who allegedly fired a rifle at a family member faces more than a dozen charges, according to a Frederick County Sheriff's Department press release.

Dennis Kolb, 44, of Union Bridge, Md., is charged with six counts each of first- and second-degree assault and reckless endangerment, police said. He is accused of firing at least three shots at a family member shortly after 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the 9000 block of Bessie Clemson Road.

Police said officers who responded to the scene of the shooting initially believed the gunman still was in the home, and they established a perimeter around the home.

Police said Kolb was found traveling in a passenger vehicle on Md. 26 at Mapleville Road.
