David H. Bender, 95

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - David H. "Grandpap" Bender, 95, of 3052 Oak Hill Road, died Saturday, April 28, 2007, at Falling Spring Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born Oct. 4, 1911, in Marion, Pa., he was the son of the late Samuel Wesley and Emma E. Hayes Bender.

His wife, Emma Marie Nuice Bender, died Oct. 15, 1994. They were married June 4, 1932.

He attended school in Marion and also attended Chambersburg High School.

Prior to retiring Oct. 4, 1976, he was a machinist at Mack Trucks Manufacturing, Hagerstown.

He was on the detail that helped to clean up Pearl Harbor following World War II, but did not serve on active duty.

He attended Pen Mar United Brethren Church.

He was a member of Eagles Club Inc., Waynesboro. He was a park guard for Washington County Parks at Pen Mar Park for seven years when it opened, and he helped with the recovery operations of the Johnstown flood.

He is survived by one daughter, Linda D. Rausch of Waynesboro; three sons, Richard E. Bender of Cadiz, Ky., Gerry A. Bender of Waynesboro and David L. Bender of Fairfield, Pa.; a special friend, Marie Zeigler of Hagerstown; six grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Rose I. Bender; two brothers, Clyde A. Bender and John Bender; one half brother, Merle Shatzer; and two grandchildren.

Services will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro. The Rev. Daniel L. Shifflett will officiate. Burial will follow in Bethel Church Cemetery, Cascade.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

James W. Cool, 83



APRIL 15, 1924-APRIL 28, 2007

ROUZERVILLE, Pa. - James W. "Jim" Cool, 83, of 11761 Pen Mar Road, and formerly of Emmitsburg, Md., died Saturday, April 28, 2007, at Waynesboro (Pa.) Hospital.

Born April 15, 1924, in York Springs, Pa., he was the son of the late John William and Mary Elizabeth Riley Cool.

He attended school in Emmitsburg.

He was employed as a molder and grinder by Frick Co., Waynesboro. He retired in 1991.

He was a Catholic.

He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles 1758, Waynesboro, and a member of National AARP.

He is survived by his wife of more than 59 years, Jean L. Fissel Cool; two daughters, Jeanne L. Haines of McKnightstown, Pa., and Judith A. Harless of Waynesboro; one son, James C. Cool of Fairfield, Pa.; two sisters, Mary E. Bentz of Waynesboro and Ann E. Lewis of Thurmont, Md.; three brothers, Samuel F. Cool of Walkersville, Md., Glenn I. Cool of Thurmont and David A. Cool of Gettysburg, Pa.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Martha Baker and Jane Hurley; and six brothers, John R. Cool, Frederick E. Cool, Carroll Cool, Clarence L. Cool, Robert L. Cool and George D. Cool.

Services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro. The Rev. David S. Keller will officiate. Burial will follow in Green Mount Cemetery, Arendtsville, Pa.

The family will receive friends today from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Bobby R. Slick, 77

Bobby Randolph Slick, 77, of Main Street, Keedysville, Md., went to be with the Lord Sunday, April 29, 2007, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Dec. 6, 1929, in Mount Lena, he was the son of the late Claude Randolph and Vallie Irene Stottlemyer Slick.

He was a 1948 graduate of Boonsboro High School.

Bobby was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving with the 101st Airborne, spending most of his military career in Europe.

He was a member of Clopper-Michael Post 10 American Legion in Boonsboro, McClellan Gun Club in Keedysville, Southside Senior Citizen Bowling League, former member of Keedysville Ruritan, and he served with the Town Council and Water Board in Keedysville.

He was a most recent member of First Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Boonsboro and was a longtime member of Salem United Methodist Church in Keedysville.

He was retired after 41 years of employment with Potomac Edison in Hagerstown. He was a member of the Potomac Edison Forerunners.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Patsy J. Long Slick; and son, Michael L., and wife, Conda Eccard Slick, of Boonsboro.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Bast Funeral Home in Boonsboro. The Revs. John S. Powell and Malcolm R. Stranathan will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Keedysville.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
