New jail, by the numbers

The new Franklin County Jail, by the numbers:

·$30 million - The cost of construction.

·7 feet by 11 feet - The size of each double-bunked cell.

·470 - The number of beds in seven housing units and a medical unit, expandable to 700 beds if necessary in the future.

·200 -The approximate capacity of the existing prison.

·378 - The number of inmates being held Tuesday in the existing Franklin County Prison complex.

·135,000 square feet - The size of the new jail, three times that of the current prison.

·2,300 - The number of people committed to the county prison last year.

·120 - The number of staff members, including 82 corrections officers.

·115 - The number of surveillance cameras.


·$7 million - Franklin County's corrections budget for 2007.

·2,000 - The approximate number of people who have toured the new jail.

·2 - The number of handicapped-accessible cells in each housing unit.

·3:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 1 - Dedication ceremony for the new jail, which will open in June or July.
