Armed robbery reported in W.Va.



MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Deputies were investigating an armed robbery at Brandy-Faye's Food and More in Meadow Lane Plaza, the Berkeley County Sheriff's Department said.

On Tuesday at about 10:30 p.m., a man described as white, wearing dark clothes and covering his face and hands entered the business through the front door, displayed a weapon and made demands of the only employee in the store.

The female employee complied with the robber's demands. He fled the area on foot with cash.

Sheriff's deputies respond to calls



The Washington County Sheriff's Department responded to the following incidents, according to Sgt. Roy Harsh:

Wednesday:

· At 1:47 a.m., a traffic stop on Dual Highway west of Interstate 70 led to a an alcohol and drug arrest. Michael Whetzel, 42, of 8605 Downsville Pike, was charged with driving while intoxicated and possession of drugs.

Tuesday:

· At 4 p.m., malicious destruction of property was reported at Rosemary's Florist, 21 E. Potomac St. in Williamsport. About $1,500 in damage to a greenhouse was reported.

· At 4:47 p.m., breaking and entering was reported in the 17300 block of Broadfording Road. A family member reportedly broke into the residence.




No foul play suspected in Pa. man's death



FANNETTSBURG, Pa. - Pennsylvania State Police and the Franklin County Coroner's Office were investigating the death of a man found in his home Tuesday.

Coroner Jeffrey R. Conner said an autopsy was performed Wednesday at Lehigh Valley Medical Center on the body of Richard F. Sensi, 65, of 12476 Creek Road. Police said Sensi was found by a neighbor at about 8:30 p.m.

Conner said "no foul play is suspected at this time" in Sensi's death. A determination of the cause and manner of his death, however, will not be made until the results of toxicology tests are available in about six to eight weeks.




Woman charged in assault on girl, 14



CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Borough police charged a woman with simple assault and endangering the welfare of a child after a 14-year-old girl was struck in the head with a beer bottle Tuesday night.

Police said charges against Sarah F. Mackey, 22, of 169 W. King St., were filed with Magisterial District Judge Todd Williams' office. Mackey was involved in a domestic altercation at her home at about 8:30 p.m. and swung the bottle at several people before hitting the teenager.




Drugs-for-gun deal leads to charges



MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Three people who allegedly were involved in a drugs-for-gun deal Wednesday were arrested in the parking lot of a southern Berkeley County, W.Va., bar, according to a press release from the Berkeley County Sheriff's Department.

Phillip Kane, 36, of Front Royal, Va., allegedly exchanged 14 grams of powder cocaine for a fully automatic Mac-11 machine gun. Luis Vasquez, 26, of Stephens City, Va., and Amber Laidler, 20, of Winchester, Va., allegedly met with Kane to get the gun, police said.

Kane is charged with delivery of a controlled substance, felon in possession of a firearm and conspiracy to deliver a controlled substance, and his bond was set at $200,000.

Vasquez is charged with conspiracy to deliver a controlled substance and conspiracy to possess a machine gun. Laidler is charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and possession of a machine gun. The bonds for Vasquez and Laidler were set at $150,000, police said.

Police said members of the Berkeley County Criminal Investigations Division, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, U.S. Marshals Service and Charles Town Police Department helped with the sting.




Man charged in robberies surrenders



MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A third suspect in two home-invasion robberies in Martinsburg, W.Va., earlier this month turned himself in to the Martinsburg Police Department, according to a press release.

Lante Jerrel Cook, 18, of 1338 Files Cross Road in Martinsburg, is charged with seven counts of armed robbery, seven counts of burglary and seven counts of wanton endangerment.

A jail officer said Cook, Victor Brian Potter Jr., of 615 W. Burke St., and Gary Donzell Guest Jr., 21, of 702 Virginia Ave. in Martinsburg, were in Eastern Regional Jail Wednesday night.

The Herald-Mail reported that a criminal complaint against Guest stated that two masked gunmen forced their way into the basement of a South Rosemont Avenue home on April 12, ordering two residents to lay on the floor. Among the items stolen was a bubble gum container filled with about $200 in change.

On April 15, a family of five was awakened in its South High Street home by three men who threatened them with guns, according to the complaint. A gold watch, necklace, ring, cell phone and earrings were stolen, according to the complaint.

Guest is being held in lieu of a $385,000 cash-only bond. Potter, whose age was not given, was being held in lieu of a $610,000 cash-only bond.

The investigation was continuing, according to the release.

Bond for Cook was set at $210,000.
