The Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau has just released a new Internet version of its popular new bicycle tours map and brochure for Washington County.

The colorful glossy printed map and brochure is now totally online, and includes eight different bicycle loop tours throughout Washington County, including one through Hagerstown. Each tour varies in length, from 10 to 34 miles, and explores a variety of terrain. Each individual tour is capable of being printed out separately, so riders can easily enjoy their experience.

In addition to bicycle maps and routes, the new online guide includes a welcome to Washington County, pertinent safety information, a listing of local bike shops, points of interest, important links and a brief history of the county.

The tour routes were supplied by the Cumberland Valley Cycling Club. The printed map-brochures are available at the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention Bureau Welcome Center in downtown Hagerstown and other locations.

The hundreds of miles of low-traffic rural roads in the county, almost all good for bicycling, have always attracted cyclists. The C&O Canal towpath and the Western Maryland Rail Trail are also popular destinations, as well as Antietam National Battlefield. Several local state parks also offer mountain biking, including Greenbrier State Park.

"The original project was a joint effort with the Washington County Planning Department, the City of Hagerstown's Engineering Department, the Cumberland Valley Cycling Club and Icon Graphics," said Tom Riford, president of the bureau. "Our county has some great biking, and this new online map and brochure will truly help cyclists, and help promote our county." Riford said thousands of cyclists explore Washington County annually.

Trails.com rankings show that half of Maryland's 10 most popular trails are in or near Washington County. Many cyclists who enjoy riding throughout Washington County say that they are escaping from the confines of the urban metro areas.

The county's road biking tours "are some of the best in the East," according to Cumberland Valley Cycling Club President Richard Cushwa. "We have a lot of magazines writing about the great cycling in Washington County. Getting this recognition is exciting for the Cumberland Valley Cycling Club, our race team the Antietam Velo Club and for biking enthusiasts throughout the area."

The Bicycle Tour Map was produced by the Washington County Convention and Visitor Bureau in cooperation with the Cumberland Valley Cycling Club. The design is by Icon Graphics. The Web site is hosted by DHWeb. For additional information about what to see and do in Washington County, contact the CVB at 301-791-3246 or visit www.marylandmemories.org/biketours.
