Hawks break out brooms, sweep Essex

BALTIMORE - Matt Murray hit his third home run of the year, a two-run shot in the first inning, and Roland Thiele had two hits and drove in three runs as Hagerstown Community College defeated CCBC-Essex 12-5 in the first game of a doubleheader sweep in Maryland JuCo Conference action. The Hawks won the second game, 7-5.

Matt Byers had three hits and two RBI, while Jacob Darr added two hits in the opener for HCC (20-18, 11-6).

In the second game, Murray, Jason Gordner and Tyler Beard each had two hits and Gordner and Murray each drove in a run for the Hawks.

Alderson-Broaddus 1-11, Shepherd 0-3

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Michael DiGiacomo's solo home run gave Alderson-Broaddus a victory in the first game, and the Battlers got a grand slam from Brett twigg and a three-run shot from Paul Day to rout the Rams in the second game of a West Virginia Conference doubleheader.

Day threw a three-hitter for Alderson-Broaddus in the opener, outdueling Shepherd starter Brandon Armentrout, who scattered five hits in the loss.

John Hawse, Chris Wilkins and Josh Wenderoth had two hits each for the Rams (14-16, 7-5) in the second game. Dirk Webb drove in two runs.

HCC 4-9, Harford 0-2

BEL AIR, Md. - Faline Brown tossed a no-hitter with six strikeouts in the opener of Hagerstown Community College's doubleheader sweep of Harford Community College in Maryland JuCo action.

Ashley Arentz had two hits and drove in a run for the Hawks in the opener.

In the second game, Adrienne Munoz went 4-for-4 with a double and a triple, and Brown went the distance for her second victory of the day, scattering five hits and striking out seven.

HCC (22-4, 12-2) scored seven runs on seven hits in the seventh inning to pull away. Kasie Beaver hit a two-run single in the frame and finished with two hits and three RBI. Arentz finished 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Shepherd 3-7, Ohio Valley 2-4

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Amy Edmondson doubled and scored on Jamie Griffin's single in the sixth inning, giving the Rams a victory in the first game on the way to a doubleheader sweep of Ohio Valley in the West Virginia Conference.

Alicia Brandenburg (6-5) struck out eight to earn the win in the first game for Shepherd (22-15, 8-2).

In the second game, Rae Johnson went 3-for-3 and Mia Zappacosta (8-4) struck out seven for the Rams.

HCC at Cal Carnival

CALIFORNIA, Pa. - Jerome Jones Jr. won the men's shot put, discus and hammer throw events at the Cal Track Carnival at California University of Pennsylvania.

Jones took the shot put title with an effort of 53 feet, 3 3/4 inches, won the discus in 149-8 and claimed the hammer throw gold with an effort of 151 even, leading the way for HCC to finish third in the men's team standings.

The Hawks swept the top three places in the 200 meters. Harold Clark Jr. won in 22.06, Dadre Williams followed in 22.51 and Kevin Johnson was third in 22.89 in the fully automatic timed meet.

In the 400, Johnson was third in 50.06 and Alex Moore was fourth in 50.40

In the men's 3K steeplechase, Josh Keyfauver took third in 10:31.01, Josh Snyder was fourth in 10:58.98 and Jeff McCauley finished fifth in 11:24.12.

HCC won the men's 400 relay in 42.58 and was second in the 1,600 relay in 3:22.63.

The women finished fifth in the team standings, led by Meaghan Weaver, who was third in the discus with a throw of 99-7 and second in the hammer throw with an effort of 74-4.

Brown places in two events

PRINCETON, N.J. - Smithsburg graduate Corey Brown, a senior at Mount St. Mary's, finished third in the high jump with a leap of 1.99 meters and fourth in the long jump with a mark of 7.08 meters at the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton University.
