Driver going wrong way to I-81 leads to serious crash

April 23, 2007

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Two people were flown to area hospitals after a car traveling the wrong way on Interstate 81 collided with another car head-on, Pennsylvania State Police said.

Police said Mary Jane Kitzmiller, 59, of Carlisle, Pa., was driving a 1995 Buick Regal south in the northbound lane of I-81 about a mile and a half south of the Pa. 316 (Wayne Avenue) exit at 6:56 a.m. Sunday. The Buick struck the front passenger side of a northbound 2003 BMW 325i driven by Gary Lee Hoffman, 34, of Hagerstown.

Police said the Buick came to rest in the left northbound lane and the BMW became airborne, coming to rest in the ditch between the southbound and northbound lanes.

A nursing supervisor said Sunday evening Hoffman was in stable condition at York (Pa.) Hospital, while a house manager at Hershey (Pa.) Medical Center said Sunday evening Kitzmiller was in critical condition.
