Lindsey Mills, a sophomore at Clear Spring High School, recently took third place in an essay contest sponsored by the Washington County Commission for Women, according to a Washington County Public Schools press release.

Lindsey's essay focused on Elizabeth Blackwell, the first female doctor in the United States. At a March 14 ceremony held by the Commission for Women, Lindsey received a certificate from the commission, a recognition letter from U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Md., and a check for $100, according to the release.

March was National Women's Month, and the contest theme was "Women in the Healing Arts."
