Jeffrey Franklin of Martinsburg, W.Va., a senior majoring in architecture was recently named the recipient of Virginia Tech's Outstanding Graduating Senior Award in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies for the 2006-2007 academic year.

The Virginia Tech Alumni Association and the senior class annually sponsor the Outstanding Senior Awards, which recognize exceptional performance by a graduating senior from each college within the university. Students and faculty of each of the eight colleges select the recipients. GPAs of the awardees range between 3.75 and 4.0.

Tiffany Nicole Kimbrough, a senior neuroscience major at Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pa., has been named to the dean's list for the fall 2006 semester.

A graduate of Boonsboro High School, she is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Kimbrough of Hagerstown.

Five Frederick County high school students placed either first or second statewide in recent Maryland Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) leadership conference competitions.

Placing first were Urbana students Danny Mulhern and Joy Zhang in business ethics and Walkersville student Leah Freeman in spreadsheet applications.

Placing second were Middletown student Nasir Abdulghany in banking and financial systems and Urbana students David Gu in economics and Evan Bromfield in public speaking.

They are invited to the FBLA national leadership conference in Chicago this summer.

Brittany Beard, daughter of Dale and Julie Beard of Hagerstown, recently was inducted into Kappa Delta Pi international honor society at Salisbury (Md.) University.

Beard, a 2003 graduate of South Hagerstown High School, is a junior majoring in early childhood education.

Kappa Delta Pi promotes excellence in and recognizes outstanding contributions to education.

Joshua Russin of Frederick, Md., a student at McDaniel College, Westminster, Md., has been selected to appear in Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities.

Russin is majoring in political science and international studies.

David L. Waldman, son of Mary and Paul Waldman of Hagerstown, is a member of the Hamilton College men's outdoor track and field team for the spring 2007 season.

Waldman is a senior majoring in world politics at the Clinton, N.Y., school.

The following area students received academic honors at Gettysburg (Pa.) College for the fall 2006 semester:

Susannah Rhodes of Hagerstown, Lee Blaser of Frederick, Md. and Daniel Papuchis of Myersville, Md., were named to the dean's list for compiling a quality-point average of 3.60 or higher for the semester.

Stephanie Harrell of Sharpsburg, Brian Morgan of Frederick and Steven Papuchis of Myersville were named to the dean's commendation list for compiling a quality-point average of 3.33 to 3.59 for the semester.

Hagerstown Business College held a graduation ceremony for 141 students Saturday, April 14, at North Hagerstown High School.

Students were recognized for earning associate's degrees and certificates in 19 programs in the business, allied health, legal studies, graphic design and information technology fields.
