AAUW book sale stocked up

April 20, 2007|by TIFFANY ARNOLD

As with years past, serious bookworms will be camping outside of the Washington County Agricultural Education Center on Wednesday morning.

They'll be waiting for the start of a spring book sale hosted by the Hagerstown branch of the American Association of University Women, where roughly 50,000 used books will be on sale. The event attracts book lovers hoping to peruse the more than 40 genres to find rare and out-of-print titles.

"People come in with chairs and coffee and breakfast and sit out there and wait for us to open," said organizer Joann Fillingham.

The AAUW's spring book sale - which starts Wednesday, April 25, and ends Sunday, April 29 - helps fund scholarships for local female high school students.

Some of the deals: paperbacks for 50 cents and hardbacks starting at $1. Saturday is half-price day. On Sunday, buy a grocery bag of books for $5, or six bags for $20. Several special books will be available for auction. Sealed bids will be accepted through the first three days of the sale and will be opened Friday, April 28, at 7:45 p.m.

Fillingham said the organization has been hosting used book sales since 1963.
