Washington County DSS honors MCI participation in AIDS walk

April 20, 2007

The Washington County Department of Social Services recognized the efforts of the Maryland Correctional Institution's (MCI) Veterans Group, staff and the inmates who participated in an AIDS Walk held on Oct. 14, 2006, that raised $3,015 to assist persons with HIV/AIDS in Washington County.

On March 7, John Kenney, program manager of WCDSS Adult Services and Hector Gomez, HIV/AIDS case manager presented a plaque to the veterans group and distributed certificates to all participants.

Volunteers from the veterans group organized the walk, and approximately 300 inmates participated in the event.

The support of Nancy Rouse, warden of MCI, along with her administrative assistants, and Bob Cobb, volunteer coordinator, was essential to the AIDS Walk. Their help, as well as the correctional officers who provided security, is greatly appreciated by the Washington County Department of Social Services.

The AIDS Walk funds are primarily used to purchase personal hygiene supplies and other basic needs of the increasing number of persons living with HIV or AIDS in the community. The Washington County DSS, through its adult services program, provides services such as case management, transportation, in-home aide services, and assistance with benefit entitlement applications. Another AIDS Walk will be held at MCI this fall.
