COLLEGE SOFTBALL



CUMBERLAND, Md. - Eight was more than enough for Hagerstown Community College as the Hawks swept Allegany in a Maryland JuCo Conference doubleheader, beating the Trojans 8-0 and 8-1 on Wednesday to move into a first-place tie in the conference standings.

Sam Koehl (9-3) tossed a two-hitter with seven strikeouts, Adrienne Munoz had two hits and four RBI and Saline Brown ripped a double and triple to pace HCC (18-4-1, 10-2).

Brenna Muckle pitched a four-hitter with five strikeouts and was supported by a 14-hit attack in the nightcap. Kasie Beaver and Brown each had two hits in the second game for HCC.




COLLEGE BASEBALL



Shepherd 11-0, Concord 4-7

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Shepherd used a 19-hit attack to defeat Concord in the opener.

Drew McCormick went 4-for-4 with a home run and three RBI and Chris Wilkins and Dirk Webb each had three hits for the Rams (14-12). John Hawse had two hits and three RBI and Tyler Walburn added two hits.

In the nightcap, the Rams were held to two hits by Concord (18-5).




COLLEGE GOLF



Rams finish 5th in WVIAC

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Shepherd finished fifth at the WVIAC Championships at Cacapon State Park. University of Charleston took team honors.

Bryan Snow led the Rams with a three-round total of 233 to tie for 11th place. Sam Harrison tied for 18th with a 238 and Trevor Hedges tied for 24th with a 242. Paterick Clark fired a 244 to tie for 31st place and Zach Boyd tied for 36th with a 247.

Charleston's Michael Todd was the individual medalist after finishing at 223.




COLLEGE TRACK & FIELD



Pettner honored by Big Ten

Penn State senior Allen Pettner, the former Hagerstown Community College and James Buchanan standout, has been named the Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week.

Pettner opened the outdoor season last weekend with a personal-record and regional-qualifying toss of 226 feet, 6 inches in the javelin at the Stanford Invitational, winning by more than 30 feet.

His performance currently ranks first in the Big Ten and third in the NCAA this spring. Pettner is the defending Big Ten champion in the javelin.

Reed scores an ace

Andy Reed, assistant boys basketball coach at St. Maria Goretti, recorded a hole-in-one at Beaver Creek Country Club. On the 126-yard No. 3, Reed used a 6-iron to nail his ace. He was in a foursome with Lowell Coates, Ed Reese and Walt Cunningham.
