Jane Anderson Brides to close

A staple of the downtown business scene will close after selling women's formal wear for more than 50 years.

Carol Norton, owner of Jane Anderson Brides at 11 N. Potomac St., said she decided to close the business after 3 1/2 years of ownership to address personal health issues.

"The closing is for good unless someone purchases the store," she said. "It was fun ... helping create a unique look for (that) special day."

Norton said she purchased the shop from Jane Anderson, who ran it for about 17 years. The business has sold dresses for at least 50 consecutive years, she said.

Norton was busy Wednesday afternoon marking down merchandise for a liquidation sale for select customers that begins at 10 a.m. today and ends April 25.

Afterward, the sale will continue for the public until everything is sold, she said.

"It's going to be an exciting sale event," she said. "We have wonderful merchandise, and we're offering very attractive prices."

Norton said discounts will vary depending on the item.

The store carries the Tri-State area's largest and most complete selection of prom and pageant dresses, and hundreds of bridal and bridesmaids gowns, she said.

The merchandise also includes veils, headpieces, jewelry, gloves and shoes.

Norton said customers will have a chance to win prizes during contests throughout the sale.

Jane Anderson Brides employed six people and two contracted seamstresses, Norton said.
