MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - No. 1 Jefferson fell short in its quest for the Hawaiian Tropic championship Saturday, losing in the finale to Canfield (Ohio), 6-5.

Jefferson (12-2) fell behind 5-1 in the third inning and tried to play catch-up, beginning with a solo home run from Marquis Jones in the fourth inning.

The Cougars had runners on second and third with two outs in the top of the seventh, but they couldn't score the tying run.

No. 2 Chambersburg 7, State College 6

STATE COLLEGE Pa. - Marshall Gilbert had three hits and drove in three runs as Chambersburg beat State College.

Brian Massimilla added two hits and two RBI for the Trojans (4-1).

Northern Garrett 16, Hancock 0

HANCOCK - Northern Garrett held Hancock to only two hits, easily winning the championship game of the H. Lynn Kerns Easter Tournament and improving to 10-0.


Hancock (2-7) beat Broadfording 9-6 in the semifinals as Danny Mauk pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts, Lucas Trunkle had two hits and Nick Harvey and Josh Finney each had two RBI.

Smithsburg, which fell to Northern Garrett in the semifinals, beat Broadfording 14-2 in the consolation game.

Kevin Kocsis hit a solo home run and Josh Bodine hit a two-run home run in a six-run second inning for the Leopards.

Jake Staebler picked up the win allowing two hits. Kevin Tyler had three hits and Bodine and Brandon Knight each had two.

Mercersburg 9-11, Hill School 0-12

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Ryan Colby and Drew Crofton combined on a three-hit shutout in the first game of the Mid-Atlantic Prep League doubleheader with Hill.

Colby went the first five innings with five strikeouts and Crofton finished with three punchouts.

The Blue Storm (5-4, 1-3) got sloppy in the nightcap with five errors and Hill took charge with a seven-run second inning. Mercersburg rallied back with two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh, but fell short.

Cord Heine hit his fourth homer of the season and had three hits in the doubleheader for the Storm, while Dusty French and Kenny Burns each had four hits on the day and Clinton Brown had three.


No. 2 Eagles go 3-0 at home

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Hedgesville went 3-0 at its mixer, beating Thomas Johnson 2-1, Clarke County 12-0 and Hampshire 10-0.

Brittany Kolb had two hits and the game-winning RBI in the 12th inning as Hedgesville beat Thomas Johnson.

Jess Shirley had nine strikeouts and Brittany Boarman had three hits for the Eagles.

Samantha Nazelrod hit a three-run homer in the third as Hedgesville beat Clarke County.

Jess Mason, Shirley and Boarman all doubled for the Eagles.

Abby Elliot had her first varsity start and pitched a no-hitter, striking out eight as Hedgesville beat Hampshire.

Jess Shirley went 4-for-4 with three RBI and Chelsie Oals added two hits, including a triple, for the Eagles (14-1).

Mercersburg 11-3, Hill 2-7

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Cree Riley had six strikeouts and three hits as Mercersburg Academy beat Hill in the first game of a doubleheader.

Lauren Dobish had four hits and Kate Vary had two hits for the Blue Storm.

In the second game, Lizz Harvey hit a three-run homer for Mercersburg in a loss. Dobish had two hits for the Blue Storm (4-4).

St. James 7, Blue Ridge 6

ST. GEORGE, Va. - P.J. Mara had five goals and an assist to lead St. James to a victory over Blue Ridge School.

Jordan Barr scored twice for the Saints (9-1). Troy Gogoll had three assists, Cyrus Morgan had two and Henry Warner had one. Nick Beardsley had 12 saves.

Smithsburg 6, Mercersburg 4

SMITHSBURG - John Anderson had three goals to lead Smithsburg past Mercersburg in a U-16 game.

Zach Ritchie had a goal and an assist for Smithsburg, while Chris Smith and Dean White each added a goal in the win.


Mercersburg 11, Hill 10

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Gwen Buss had five goals and three assists as Mercersburg Academy beat defending Mid-Atlantic Prep League champ Hill for the first time in the Blue Storm's seven years in the MAPL.

Jenelle Paolini had three goals and an assist for Mercersburg (6-1, 1-1), Jenn Dillon had two goals and two assists, Coralie Thomas had a goal and Megan Dent-Carman and Mary Lancaster each added an assist.


Waynesboro 5, Spring Grove 3

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Jenna Lininger and Leann Sebald each had two goals to lead Waynesboro.

Katie Staubs had a goal and an assist and Katie Sandifer added two assists for the Maidens.


Williamsport 19-21, South Hagerstown 2-7
