SMITHSBURG - Bethany Garnand threw a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts to lead Smithsburg to its first victory of the season in a 6-1 decision over Hancock on Monday.

Kaitlyn Miller and Jessica Morley each had two hits for the Leopards (1-4).

Southern Fulton 10, Shanksville 0

WARFORDSBURG, Pa. - Courtney Trainor struck out seven as Southern Fulton defeated Shanksville.

Keena Elbin went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Natasha Bard had two hits, including a home run, for the Indians (4-1).


Mercersburg Academy 8-10, Good Counsel 5-8

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Runs came in bunches for Mercersburg Academy as the Blue Storm swept Good Counsel.

The Blue Storm (4-3) scored three runs in the third inning and five in the fourth in the opener. Kenny Burns had two hits and three RBI and Dave O'Brien had two safeties and two RBI.


Cord Heine had a homer among two hits and drove in two runs and Ryan Colby had two hits and four RBI, including a 2-run double, in a five-run sixth inning for what proved to be the winning runs in the second game.

Middletown 15, South 2

BRUNSWICK, Md. - South gave up 14 runs in the fourth inning, allowing three errors, nine hits and five walks in a loss to Middletown.

Derrick Hendershot had two hits for the Rebels (4-1-1).

Gwinnett Christian (Ga.) 13, Hedgesville 6

HILTON HEAD, S.C. - Maurice Adams had two hits, including a home run, and three RBI and Jesse Simmons went 3-for-3 but Hedgesville lost to Gwinnett Christian (23-1) in the Batrup Tournament.

Brandon Nisewarner had two hits for the Eagles (3-6). Hedgesville will meet Battery Creek today at 10 a.m.

Jefferson 13, Newark, N.Y. 3

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Wes Kidwell, Kyle Copenhaver, Matt Tiano and Marquis Jones each had two RBI as Jefferson won its opener in the Hawaiian Tropic Classic.

The Cougars (9-1) play Louisa Co., Va. today at noon.
