Trash pickup set for Saturday

April 09, 2007

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Shepherd University student volunteers will host a trash pickup on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the boat dock on the Potomac River at the end of North Princess Street.

Students will remove trash from along the river and Town Run as part of the Department of Environmental Protection's West Virginia Make It Shine statewide cleanup.

Shepherd's Make It Shine activities are part of a larger national effort, Keep American Beautiful's Great American Cleanup.

"This is a wonderful chance for Shepherd students to learn about solid waste and its impacts on our land and water while doing something good for the community," said Dr. Keith Alexander, visiting assistant professor of environmental studies at Shepherd.

The involvement of Shepherd's Institute for Environmental Studies in the Make It Shine program grew out of an earlier cleanup done in cooperation with Caron Melton of the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection. "My students got so much out of that shorter effort that we decided to expand it and open it up for participation for students from the whole university," said Alexander. "The Make It Shine program was the perfect way to do this," he said.
