Mail Call

April 05, 2007

"I have called in several times to discuss new businesses in Hagerstown. I would like to see the Costco finally come to Hagerstown. It would definitely help our economy by providing new jobs and new customers to the area. People will travel from all over to come to a Costco. Also, what happened to our Starbucks? They're on every corner any place else, and we can't even get one in Hagers-town! There were also talks of a Barnes & Noble coming to Hagerstown ... what happened to that?"

I am seeing a lot of misinformation regarding the resolution passed by Congress recently for the emergency funding bill. The pork in the bill is not just pork, but was put in to sway the votes of representatives that were going to vote against it initially. This was done to see the resolution got passed. Secondly, yes, I am aware they gave President Bush the money he asked for, but with many strings attached. It set timelines for withdrawal of troops with a stipulation that additional troops would have to wait 15 days regardless of reason. That means no extra help to aid those that are already serving."

"I would like to correct the caller from Halfway who said President Bush and the Republicans are using the attorney general issue as a screen to take attention away from the issues in the Middle East. Wrong, it's the Democrats as usual, throwing stuff out to see if they can make something stick. Their hatred for the Bush administration overshadows most everything they do."

"Note to parents: We all agree that in this alarming world, youth sports are a place where a kid can still be a kid. There is a severe shortage of parent volunteers in Berkeley County Little Leagues - and, with all of the people moving to the county, playable fields are even more scarce. We need parents to mobilize - volunteer, do, act and make a difference before the only baseball your kids are playing is on a video game. And please remember, your coaches are not paid - if you disagree with how practice and games are managed, please don't hestiate to lead your own team."

"I think the little speech that you make at the beginning, telling us that we can talk on any subject, I think you should change that to 'any subject we agree with.' I have called several times about The Maryland Theatre having a liquor license, which I don't see any sense in that at all, that we can't at least have one place where people who object to drinking can go and have a pleasurable evening without having other people drinking in the same building they're in. I don't see any reason why you shouldn't print this either. It's my personal opinion, and I think that I am entitled to that. I think we should discontinue the liquor license at The Maryland Theatre."

"Some of us are wondering if anyone around the area of Broadfording Road and Greencastle Pike have had any of their cats or other pets just disappear?"

"To the person who stated in Mail Call that 'I have a right to quality health care.' In America, there are no rights to health care, much less quality health care, or state-of-the-art health care. Just today, The Daily Mail reported that thousands of people in Washington County can't afford to get sick. The health care industry is a business, so one can buy health care if one has the means to. Some countries provide a right to health care, but we call them socialist. We wouldn't want that in America, now would we?"

- Cavetown

"I'm calling in regards to the recent changes in weather we've seen, and how they may very well be related to global warming. Just about two or three weeks ago, we had a snowstorm here in Hagerstown, with icing and very dangerous road conditions. A few days before that we had had 70-degree weather, and now just within two weeks after the snow and ice we have 70-degree weather today - a dramatic difference to what we just had within a couple weeks. I really do believe that this shows that there is some serious climate changes that we really need to take note of."

- Hagerstown

"From talking to lots of my friends and by reading Mail Call, I'm pretty sure that most of us do not agree with illegal immigrants being in this country. What we've all got to do - we can't do too much by just hollering around all the time - but what we gotta do when election time comes is make sure we know how someone stands on that. If they're for the illegals, like Gov. O'Malley apparently is, now that he wants to give them college educations, then we're gonna vote them out and try to get somebody in there that are against them."

- Sharpsburg

"The police department should get a big 'Thumbs up' for not releasing the location of the sobriety checkpoint for this weekend. It defeats the purpose to announce the location before the event."

- Hagerstown

"People are bashing the Democrats for taking a couple days off. I guess they forgot that out of 365 days, the Republicans showed up 98 in the House and Senate ... the rest of the time with their lobbyist friends."
