CVB plans training session for tourism workers

April 03, 2007

The Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) is hosting a training session for front-line tourism staffers.

The purpose of "Washington County On The Road" is to familiarize local management and employees with the parks and attractions in Hagerstown-Washington County.

The free tour is an annual event sponsored by the CVB, and is open to CVB members.

"This tour helps the front-line staff person to relay accurate information to visitors, and it often leads to guests staying extra nights," said Director of Sales of the CVB, Betsy De Vore. "This event has been helpful for anyone coming into contact with visitors. We've also found that visitors come back when they have received accurate and helpful details about our community."

"Washington County On The Road" will take place on Tuesday, April 10. So far, there are more than 30 employees of CVB member-businesses who have signed up to participate. CVB President and CEO Tom Riford will be the tour guide. After viewing an introductory short film, tour stops include popular tourist destinations such as Antietam National Battlefield, the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, Fort Frederick, the Washington County Rural Heritage Museum and the Jonathan Hager House and Museum.

Several CVB members are participating, or helping arrange stops during the day-long event. Lunch will be at Weaver's Restaurant in Hancock, and the motorcoach will be provided by Atlantic Coast Charters.

According to the State of Maryland's DLLR, there are nearly 6,000 people working in the leisure and hospitality field in Washington County. "There are many people who need to learn about what's in our county to help visitors.

Customer service staffers, lodging establishment employees, restaurant workers, and more. This annual bus tour gives a great introduction for the attractions and sites throughout Washington County," said De Vore.
