Planetarium podcasts available at

The William M. Brish Planetarium at Washington County Public Schools' Central Office on Commonwealth Avenue in Hagerstown is featuring a new series of podcasts at

"Skylights" is produced by Rod Martin, planetarium resource teacher. Martin will host monthly sky tours and give previews of planetarium programs. is hosted by Antietam Cable Television and The Herald-Mail Co.

Bartlett to host Academy Night information session

FREDERICK, Md. - U.S. Rep. Roscoe Bartlett, R-Md., will host an Academy Night information session about the U.S. service academies for high school students and their parents on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Jack B. Kussmaul Theater at Frederick Community College, 7932 Opossumtown Pike in Frederick.

Representatives from all five service academies will attend. Nominations from members of Congress are required to apply to the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y., the Naval Academy in Annapolis, the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., and the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y. Students apply directly to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn.

Artistic competition open to high school seniors

U.S. Rep. Roscoe Bartlett will sponsor the 2007 Congressional Artistic Discovery Competition for high school seniors, according to a press release issued by his office.

Artistic Discovery is a high school art competition coordinated by individual members of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Bartlett, R-Md., said the competition creates a showcase for the talent of students in Maryland's 6th Congressional District, according to the release.

The Best in Show winner from the 6th district will be displayed in the Cannon Tunnel on Capitol Hill for one year, and might be awarded an artistic merit scholarship of $5,000 per year by the Savannah College of Art and Design, according to the release.

The deadline for submitting artwork is April 23. Participating students must reside in the 6th Congressional District.

Kercheval receives Chick-fil-A scholarship

Chick-fil-A Inc. has awarded a $1,000 Leadership Scholarship to Tony Kercheval of Hagerstown, according to a press release from the company.

Kercheval joins 14 other students who have received the scholarship from Chick-fil-A in Hagerstown. He was given the scholarship by the Hagerstown restaurant's franchised operator, Randy Scott.

The scholarships are given to restaurant employees pursuing a higher education, according to the release.
