Remembering John Colson

March 27, 2007

For almost 10 years, a group of citizens from around the region has met monthly to provide The Herald-Mail's editorial page staff with input on our performance.

Except for some light refreshments, they're not paid for their time, even though the feedback they provide is invaluable.

And the questions they ask guests ranging from the superintendent of schools to the CEO of the Washington County Hospital show us that the concerns of Herald-Mail journalists are not always the same as those of local citizens.

One of those who brought a unique perspective to the group was John Colson, who died Thursday after a four-year battle with cancer.

He never hesitated to take us to task when he felt we needed some hard but constructive criticism and he wrote with passion about what he considered some of the blunders of local government.

That he continued to participate in the group even while battling his illness is a sacrifice we will not soon forget. We will miss his input and the sparks of intelligence that his presence added to every meeting.
