Second woman dies from crashes on snow-covered roads

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A vehicle accident has claimed the life of a 68-year-old Shippensburg, Pa., woman, Pennsylvania State Police in Chambersburg said.

Patricia Louise Smith is the second person to die as a result of accidents March 16 in Pennsylvania, according to police and published reports.

Smith was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Susan Louise Goetz, 48, of Chambersburg, who was driving north on West Commerce Street in Hamilton Township at about 6:30 p.m. March 16, police said.

Police said after Goetz lost control of her vehicle because of her speed on the snow-covered road, the vehicle spun and hit a storage unit. A 19-year-old Chambersburg man who sustained minor injuries and Smith were extricated from the vehicle.

Goetz, who sustained moderate injuries, and another passenger got out of the vehicle on their own, police said.

Smith was pronounced dead at about 4:40 p.m. Wednesday at York Hospital, police said.

Manuela Crider, 40, of 204 Hawbaker Ave. in Waynesboro, Pa., died after the 2002 Chevrolet in which she was traveling began to fishtail and left the southbound lane before colliding with two northbound vehicles in the 14000 block of Wayne Highway, Washington Township police said.
