Deputy performs CPR to save man's life

March 24, 2007

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A Berkeley County Sheriff's Department deputy was being hailed for saving the life of a man who apparently attempted suicide Friday afternoon.

Sheriff's Deputy Matthew Rephann found the man hanging from an extension cord at a Berkeley County residence and was able to perform CPR to revive him before EMS responders arrived, according to a sheriff's department press release.

"He's to be commended," Sheriff W. Randy Smith later said of Rephann's efforts just after noon on Friday. "The community is fortunate to have deputies like him on duty."
