During the month of March, two fundraisers were held to support the Washington County Child Advocacy Center, also known as The Safe Place, at the Walnut Street Medical Center in Hagerstown.

On March 11, the Home Builders Association of Washington County hosted the third annual benefit concert and auction at Hagerstown Community College in support of the Child Advocacy Center. The concert featured local recording artist Tori Anderson and Possum Holler and nationally known recording artist Exile. Signed autographed memorabilia was auctioned throughout the evening, with the proceeds going directly to the center.

On March 16, Friends of Safe Place, Inc. held an Evening of Comedy and Magic at The Maryland Theatre. A touring magic show, featuring magicians Antje Pode, Ron Geoffries, Tony Chapek, Jay Sterling and Lynn Trefzger, made its first stop in Hagers-town.

The proceeds of the event, sponsor donations and ticket sales will support the center in providing services for children and families.

The Safe Place, a multi-agency task force, provides a child-friendly environment committed to reducing the trauma to children who have been abused. Law enforcement officers, prosecutors, social workers, mental health and medical professionals collaborate to provide investigations and therapeutic interventions.

The center serves more than 700 children, from birth through age 18, who have been sexually or physically abused each year. The center is an accredited member of the National Children's Alliance and a member of the Maryland Children's Alliance.

Partnering agencies include: Washington County Department of Social Services, Washington County Sheriff's Department, Washington County Health Department, Maryland State Police, Hagerstown City Police, Washington County State's Attorney's Office, Washington County Hospital, Washington County Community Partnership for Children & Families, and Antietam Pediatric & Adolescent Care.

The Washington County Department of Social Services is a field liaison of the State of Maryland Department of Human Resources under the leadership of Gov. Martin O'Malley and Secretary Brenda Donald.
