Powderly is new pastor at Presbyterian Church

March 17, 2007

Rev. Kyle Powderly has been called as the 31st pastor in the 190-year history of the Presbyterian Church of Hagerstown.

A native of Philadelphia, Powderly moved to Baltimore at an early age. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications from Millersville University and later earned his master's of divinity at Princeton Theological Seminary.

Powderly has served churches in Maryland and South Carolina in several capacities, including parish associate, coordinator of education, associate pastor and director of youth ministries.

In his work as a parish associate at Babcock Presbyterian Church in Towson, Powderly led Alpha classes, taught middle school youth, helped shape the new communications team and was a novice webmaster of the church's Web site.

In addition to being a deeply committed Christian, Powderly describes himself as a devoted tech geek and sci-fi fan and enjoys kind of obscure pop-culture references.

Powderly and his wife, Kathy, were welcomed at a reception in early February. Powderly's formal installation will be April 22 at 4 p.m.
