Downtown pub crawl begins with breakfast

Saint Patrick's Day fans can get an early start this Saturday celebrating the Irish holiday with the Downtown Live! Pub Crawl.

After seeing successful pub crawls in Baltimore and other areas, Mike Deming, a downtown developer who organizes Downtown Live! events, organized Saturday's event to generate more business for the downtown area.

Saint Patrick's Day is typically a good night for pubs and restaurants with bars, Deming said. This will help during the day, starting with a breakfast buffet at 43 South.

The buffet, from 9 to 11 a.m., will have eggs, corned beef, a potato side dish and toast.

The pub crawl starts at 11 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m.

During that time, registered participants can buy Miller Lite draft beer for $1 each at any of eight participating pubs and restaurants in downtown Hagerstown and along the fringe of downtown, Deming said.

They are 43 South, Flo, Duffy's on Potomac, The New Shortstop Tavern, The Broad Axe, The Corner Pub, Burhans Station, and Stadium Grill and Tavern.

Buses will carry participants around the pub crawl so people don't have to drive, Deming said. The buses start at 43 South and the last bus routes will end in front of 43 South, where there will be a cab stand at 5 p.m. to promote sober driving, Deming said.

There will be two bus routes with buses stopping for 10 minutes to drop off and pick up riders.

Free parking will be available in the parking deck next to Duffy's.

To register, stop by in advance or on Saturday at any of the participating establishments. Registration costs $5 and participants will be given an event T-shirt, which they wear to signify their registration to bartenders and bus drivers.

Owners and management at each establishment are responsible for knowing when to cut off service to participants, who must be 21 or older and have ID, Deming said. Drinking will not be allowed on the bus.

43 South will have live music with rock musician Allen Snyder at 2 p.m., said Deming, who owns or co-owns 43 South, Flo and Duffy's on Potomac.
