JB survives another round in state tourney

March 14, 2007

COAL TOWNSHIP, Pa. - The James Buchanan boys basketball team was on the brink of elimination once again on Tuesday. But once again, the Rockets found a way to survive.

Dion Lehman scored seven points and made two steals in overtime to lift JB past Crestwood 45-40 in the second round of the PIAA Class AAA state tournament.

The Rockets (25-4), who won a 60-58 thriller over Communications Tech in the first round Friday, will be among eight teams still alive in the state tournament when they play in the Eastern Region semifinals Friday. Opponent, site and time are still to be determined.

Crestwood (19-9) scored the first five points of overtime, but Lehman's 3-pointer with two minutes left put JB ahead for good. Lehman also hit two free throws with 31 seconds left in regulation to force the extra period. He finished with a game-high 19 points.

The Rockets, who trailed by six at halftime, opened the third quarter on a 14-5 run to take a 29-26 lead. Crestwood hit a half-court prayer at the buzzer to tie the game at 29-29 going into the fourth quarter.

JB forced overtime despite not making a field goal over the final eight minutes. Each team scored just four points - JB on four foul shots and Crestwood on a pair of field goals - to force overtime. Crestwood went 0-for-5 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.

Brandon Bryan had 12 points and Evan Angle and Shane Rife each finished with seven for the Rockets.

Adam Fazzini hit five 3s to lead Crestwood with 15 points. Kyle Bogumil scored 12 and Kevin Moulton added eight.
