Request for scooters in city expected

March 13, 2007|by DAN DEARTH

Tourists could begin riding around Hagerstown on scooters to see the sites the Hub City has to offer.

Tom Riford, president of the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau, is scheduled to address the Hagerstown City Council today about bringing Segways, motorized two-wheeled scooters, to city.

The business that would rent the scooters is TourGlides of Sharpsburg, according to information provided by the city. Segways are programmed to travel no faster than 6 mph, so people can step off in the event of an emergency.

In a letter he wrote to the city, TourGlides owner Jeffrey J. Hutman said he sees "great potential in offering our services to Hagerstown ... especially through downtown and City Park."
