What Do You Think?

March 11, 2007

Editor's note: Each week, The Herald-Mail invites readers to answer poll questions on its Web site, www.herald-mail.com. Readers also may submit comments about the poll question when voting. Each Sunday, a sampling of edited reader comments will run in The Herald-Mail.

Last week's poll question was: Is your current job secure and do you expect to retire from that job?

"In 1992, the first Bush signed NAFTA and started the tidal outflow of manufacturing jobs to his buddies in Mexico. The lack of tariffs allows these manufactured goods to come back into the country cheaper than we can produce them here. I swear the Bushs are somehow related to Mexican President Salinas. That's why the lifetime job and pension with one company will never exist in this country again. Thanks, President Bush."

"My job is very secure and I don't ever plan to retire. I love what I do and hope to be doing this until I die, even if that is age 100!"

"I am retired with a decent benefit plan that is supposed to be locked in, but nothing is for certain. Big business has sold our country right out from under us. I am a Democrat, but both parties are to blame. My years may be short, but I am concerned for those who have to pay the price. I wouldn't want to raise a family now. There is a phrase now that is called 'The browning of America' if you can grasp it."

"Have a secure trade and job. Just hope I can work past 70. Watch Lou Dobbs on the tube for a good grasp of what we are facing."

"No job is really secure except perhaps the undertaker. It is just a matter of whether you win the race to retire before they tell you that you are no longer needed. Good luck!"
