Power outage affects parts of Hagerstown

March 11, 2007

A Saturday night power outage described by the Hagerstown Police Department as "major" darkened all of Locust Street, Prospect Street, Broadway, and North East, Wayside and Oak Hill avenues.

A spokesman for the Municipal Electric Light Plant said crews were called out shortly after the first calls began coming in.

Police and dispatchers at Washington County Fire and Rescue Communications were aware of transformer problems in the first block of Charles Street around 8:50 p.m.

Calls then began coming about sparks being seen near the Coca-Cola bottling plant and Martin's Storage on Pennsylvania Avenue, dispatchers said.

Traffic lights were affected in some areas, as were elevators that in some cases stopped when the power went off, trapping passengers, police said.
