W.Va. man dies after 1-car crash

GERRARDSTOWN, W.Va. - A Gerrardstown man died early Saturday from injuries he sustained in a single-vehicle accident at the intersection of Gerrardstown and Horner Saw Mill roads, according to a Berkeley County Sheriff's Department press release.

Robert Shaffer, 21, address unavailable, was freed from the wreckage of the 1992 Toyota sedan and taken to City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va., where he was pronounced dead, according to the release.

Shaffer was driving on Gerrardstown Road at 12:51 a.m. when the car crossed into the eastbound lane, went off the road and struck a utility pole on the south side of the road, according to the release.

Lt. Gary Harmison was the first to arrive at the scene, and he reported that Shaffer, the only person in the vehicle, was trapped in the wreckage and had sustained head injuries, according to the release.

The accident was under investigation, according to the release.
