You Said It

March 07, 2007

"There is plenty of blame to go around for the neglect and substandard care of injured soldiers and veterans. There was no effective quality control or oversight by the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs. There also was no effective advocating by the service organizations such as the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans. Unfortunately, this story has just started."

- Rohrersville

"About $74,000 of Funkstown's grant (federal grants to aid fire companies) will go toward an exhaust system to purify the air in the department's engine bay, where fumes from the trucks can become trapped, especially in the winter. How did they ever survive this long without a $74,000 grant? I'll bet they either did not run the trucks inside or they opened the doors."

"Here we go once again with the cable service hikes. They went right after the most common customer (expanded basic), with nearly a $4 increase."

"People drive to the mall in cars that they cannot afford, to spend money that they don't have, to impress people that they don't like. It is easy to fall into the trap of materialism. Sadly, it has become the American way."

"Our local newspaper has finally done it - they've started putting the comics on the front page. At least that's what I hope it is, because I read about how the politicians are worried about the deficit, and talking about raising taxes on everything. These are the same politicians that want to give illegal aliens free tuition to college. We've got to stop these people."

- Hagerstown

"What's going on? Tell me - there's people dying and people crying. Lord, help us. Too many moms crying and too many of our brothers dying. That's right, that's right, you know we've got to find a way to bring some loving here today."

"Why is it when you get a new boss, whether it's a man or woman, black or white, if you do not like your boss, why is it that people whine instead of going to the classifieds and finding another job?"

"An inconvenient truth: To replace just 10 percent of America's petroleum usage with hydroelectric power would require that we build a facility the size of China's Three Gorges Dam every five years for the next 50 years."

- Smithsburg

"I'm calling about the death penalty. There's a lot of people saying the death penalty doesn't work, and I think that the reason for that is because when somebody gets the death penalty, they don't kill them. They keep them for years and years. With the DNA nowadays, you don't have to do that, and I think if somebody commits the crime, they should do the time."

- Falling Waters, W.Va.

"I just saw a beautiful sight. I'm watching a pair of robins in our tree."

- Broadfording Road

"I live on one of the one-way streets where it's park on this side these months and this side these other months. March 1 was the time to start parking on the other side of the street, and I wondered, how are we supposed to park on the other side of the street when the City of Hagers-town hasn't plowed the street - from not the last storm we had, but the one before that?"

"I see a person in Hagerstown writing in about daylight-saving time starting (earlier) and the kids will have to be out waiting in the dark on the school buses. That's the same kids who are out running around in the night in the summertime, 10:30 and 11, whooping and hollering. That's the same bunch of kids, so what's the difference whether they're up in the morning and in the dark or they're running around half the night in the dark? I think kids ought to be able to do what they always did do. Just be kids."

- Hagerstown

"I find that I have started to read 'You Said It' as part of my daily newspaper reading; however, I'm finding it frustrating, due to all the negative comments and personal comebacks that always starts 'To the person who said ...' Elementary students use the paper as a resource to curriculum. Wouldn't it be nice if they saw it as a place to help each other, to solve problems and compliment the good in our community, such as readers did with the snow angels? Let them see that we have wonderful things happening here in the Tri-State area. You could have great role modeling happening here."

- Hagerstown

"Now that the Army has fired the general in charge of Walter Reed, is our paper going to cover Building 18? The rest of the world has covered Building 18, but not our paper."

- Hagerstown

"This is on the marriage bill in Friday's paper. I'm glad we have two politicians who are saying a marriage is considered between a man and woman. I think it's a shame that you gotta spend money and fight bills like a marriage bill because these people out here, two women want to get married, two men want to get married, and have the same rights as a man and woman."
