Shear selflessness

March 07, 2007

Savannah Celestial, 8, daughter of Conrad and Joann of Hagerstown/Smithsburg and a third-grader at Smithsburg Elementary School, donated 12 inches of her hair to the Locks of Love Foundation on Feb. 28.

Mindy Dietrich did the honors at Shear Techniques, owned by Candice Grove in Smithsburg.

Savannah has grown her hair since birth and after learning about cancer and the hair loss associated with the disease, she said she wanted to give her hair to children who lost their hair to cancer.

Knowing that one of her parents' joys in life was brushing her long hair, they were asked if they would be sad or disappointed about her hair being cut. Instead, they are proud of their child's selfless act.
