Honoring a hero

March 06, 2007|by DAVE McMILLION

Patrolman Sam Smith of the Charles Town (W.Va.) Police Department was honored Monday night for helping to rescue a Jefferson County Sheriff's Department officer who was shot inside a house in the Orchard Hills subdivision Feb. 19. Cpl. Ronald Fletcher was shot three times after he responded to a house at 74 Orchard Drive for a reported burglary. Smith was one of several responders to help pull Fletcher from the home. Charles Town Police Chief Barry Subelsky presented Smith with a Life Saving Award during Monday night's Charles Town City Council meeting. Fletcher would not have survived without Smith's help and Smith's actions were "in the highest traditions" of law enforcement, Subelsky said.
