Rotarians raise funds with roast

March 06, 2007

Snow, sleet and freezing rain didn't deter nearly 600 people from attending Hagerstown Rotary's third annual Bull and Oyster Roast on Sunday, Feb. 25, at Hagers-town Community College's ARCC.

Hundreds of oysters and dozens of pounds of beef were consumed at the event, all in the name of raising money for the Rotary Foundation. About 60 Rotarians volunteered their time to either set up for the event on Saturday or work on Sunday.

"The community really turned out despite the rough weather," said John League, 2007 event chairman. "Everyone who braved the elements appeared to have a great time. We raised a lot of money that will stay in our community. We certainly appreciate everyone who came out to support us."

The Rotary Foundation has contributed more than $1 million over the years to Washington County charities and nonprofits.

One hundred percent of the profits from the B&O Roast are contributed to the Rotary Foundation.

The Bull and Oyster Roast is one of Hagerstown Rotary's three major fundraisers. The other two are the Rotary Two-for-One Value Book, and the annual Rotary Golf Tournament.

The 2007 golf tournament will be held April 26 at Fountain Head Country Club. Entry forms are available at www.hagerstownrotary.org

The 2008 Bull and Oyster Roast will be held on Feb. 24 at HCC.
