Washington County Public Schools students participated in the 24th annual MathCounts competition Feb. 24 at E. Russell Hicks Middle School, according to a school system press release.
A total of 56 sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders from middle schools in Allegany and Washington counties competed in the event.
In the team competition, Springfield Middle School's team won second place, while Boonsboro Middle School's team took third place and the team from E. Russell Hicks Middle School finished in fifth place, according to the release.
The team competition was won by Braddock Middle School from Allegany County.
Two Springfield Middle School students placed in individual events. Conner Haines won second place, and Graylon Wright finished in fourth place, according to the release.
"Countdown Round," a head-to-head math problem- solving competition, was held after the individual and team events. The top 16 finishers were randomly paired in elimination rounds. Washington County Board of Education member Ruth Anne Callaham served as moderator.
